Harvesting cannabis by pistil colour

When is the best time to harvest? How to judge ripeness by the pistils (stigmas) – and why a look at the trichomes under a loupe confirms the decision.

When is the perfect time to harvest?

The right harvest time is one of the most important factors for the quality of your harvest. Harvest too early and you lose potency and yield. Harvest too late and the active compounds break down and the buds develop an unwanted, sedating profile. The most common method for determining harvest time is examining the trichomes (resin glands) under a loupe or microscope. But there is a second, much simpler method: judging the colour of the pistils (stigmas).

What are pistils (stigmas)?

Pistils – botanically correctly called stigmas or pistils – are the fine, hair-like threads that stick out of the calyxes. At the beginning of flowering they are bright white and stand upright. Their biological function is to catch pollen for fertilisation. Because indoor growers want seedless buds (sinsemilla), the stigmas remain unfertilised and change colour naturally as they ripen.

How pistil colour changes

PhasePistil colourRipenessAdvice
Early flowering (weeks 1-3)100% white, uprightUnripe – flowering has just begunDo not harvest
Mid-flowering (weeks 4-5)30-50% brown/orange, starting to curlStill too early for most strainsKeep waiting
Harvest window (weeks 6-8)60-80% brown/orange/redOptimal harvest window for most strains✅ Ready to harvest!
Overripe (week 9+)90-100% dark brown, fully withdrawnActive compounds start to break downHarvest immediately, otherwise quality is lost

Pistil method vs. trichome method

Looking at the pistils is much easier than analysing trichomes, because you can do it with the naked eye. However, it is less accurate:

  • Pistil method: simple, no tools needed, a good guideline for beginners. However, environmental factors (wind, spraying, touching) can make the pistils change colour too early.
  • Trichome method: more accurate, because it shows the actual chemical ripeness of the resin glands. You need a 30x-60x loupe or a USB microscope.
Pro tip: combine both methods!

Use the change in pistil colour as a rough indicator and confirm the optimal moment with a trichome check. Frequently recommended harvest window: mostly milky-cloudy trichomes, hardly any clear ones, and, depending on the desired effect, about 10–30% amber.

Trichome colours and what they mean

Trichome colourConditionEffect profile
Clear / transparentUnripe – active compounds not yet fully developedWeak effect, not yet full flavour
Milky white / cloudyRipe – highest content of active compoundsOften described as clearer and more energising
AmberStart of ageing – THC slowly breaks down into CBNOften described as more physical and relaxing

Tools for determining harvest time

For an accurate trichome analysis we recommend:

  • Jeweller's loupe with LED (30x–60x): compact, affordable and ideal for a quick check in the grow room.
  • Digital USB microscope: shows the trichomes highly magnified on screen. Perfect for recording and comparing.
  • Macro lens for your smartphone: an affordable alternative for beginners.

Tools for the harvest

A loupe for checking the trichomes, sharp scissors and drying nets for gentle drying.

Common mistakes when choosing the harvest time

  • Harvesting too early out of impatience: in the last weeks of flowering the buds still become noticeably heavier and riper. Patience pays off!
  • Relying only on the pistils: wind, rain or spraying can make pistils change colour too early. Always check the trichomes too.
  • Harvesting all plants at the same time: different strains and even different phenotypes of the same strain can ripen at different times. Harvest plant by plant.
  • Cutting the whole plant at once: the top buds are often ripe 1-2 weeks earlier than the lower ones. Consider a staggered harvest (first the top colas, then the lower ones that are still ripening).

Flushing before harvest

Many growers flush their plants with pure water (without nutrients) for 7-14 days before harvest to rinse excess nutrient salts out of the substrate and the plant. This is said to improve the flavour of the dried buds – however, this effect has not been clearly proven scientifically; proper drying and curing demonstrably has more influence. If you do flush, check the EC of the runoff with an EC meter. When the EC of the runoff is close to that of the water you give, flushing is complete.

❓ FAQ: frequently asked questions about harvest time

Q: Can I also use the pistil method for autoflowering strains?

A: Yes, the pistil method also works for autoflowers. Autos are, however, genetically programmed for a certain lifespan, so with some strains the pistils change colour faster or more slowly than with photoperiod strains.

Q: My pistils are already brown, but the trichomes are still clear. What now?

A: In that case, trust the trichomes! External factors (strong wind, spraying with foliar feed, touching) can turn pistils brown too early. Wait until the trichomes have reached the desired ripeness.

Q: Are there strains for which the pistil method is unreliable?

A: Yes, with some strains with an extremely long flowering time (12+ weeks) or with strains with naturally coloured pistils (pink, purple), the colour is harder to judge. In those cases, always use the trichome method as the main indicator.
